Background of the study
Translator bias can significantly influence the way cultural texts are rendered, particularly in languages rich with heritage like Efik. Cultural texts, including proverbs, folktales, and historical narratives, embody the ethos of the Efik people. When translators allow personal, ideological, or cultural biases to influence their work, the resulting translations may deviate from the original text’s intended meaning and cultural nuance (Okechukwu, 2023). Such bias may manifest as selective omission, reinterpretation, or overemphasis of certain elements, thereby altering the cultural narrative. In academic and literary contexts, ensuring objectivity is essential for preserving the integrity of cultural texts. This study investigates the influence of translator bias on Efik language renditions by analyzing translated texts, conducting interviews with professional translators, and comparing multiple versions of the same texts. By identifying instances of bias and evaluating their impact on cultural representation, the research aims to propose methods for mitigating bias and promoting more faithful translations that respect the source material’s cultural integrity (Ifeanyi, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite efforts to maintain objectivity, translator bias continues to affect Efik renditions of cultural texts. Such bias may lead to misrepresentations that distort the intended cultural message and alter the historical narrative (Okechukwu, 2023). The lack of standardized guidelines for handling cultural material exacerbates these issues, resulting in varying interpretations that can undermine the text’s authenticity (Ifeanyi, 2024). This study seeks to identify the specific forms of bias in current translation practices and assess their impact on cultural texts, with the goal of recommending strategies to reduce bias and improve translation fidelity.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze the prevalence of translator bias in Efik cultural texts.
  2. To assess the impact of bias on the accuracy of cultural renditions.
  3. To recommend guidelines for mitigating translator bias.

Research questions:

  1. What forms of translator bias are evident in Efik cultural texts?
  2. How does bias affect the fidelity of cultural translations?
  3. What measures can be implemented to reduce bias?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the impact of translator bias on Efik language renditions of cultural texts. The findings will help translators, scholars, and cultural custodians develop best practices that ensure objectivity and preserve the original cultural message (Okechukwu, 2023; Ifeanyi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating translator bias in Efik language cultural texts and does not address bias in other genres or languages.

Definitions of terms:

  • Translator bias: The influence of personal or cultural prejudices on translation.
  • Cultural texts: Written works that embody cultural heritage and values.
  • Efik language: The indigenous language of the Efik people.
